  • 2) Lumpectomy maybe considered depending on factors like size of the tumour, number of lumps, breast size, ontological safety, surrounding DCIS.
  • 3) A second surgery for further clearance which is revision of margins may be required in five percent of patients. There may be instances where lumpectomy may need to be upgraded to mastectomy if the disease is widespread within the breast.
  • 4) Radiotherapy after lumpectomy for breast cancer is mandatory, to reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • 5) The outcomes of lumpectomy and mastectomy have been proven to be similar.

  • 2) After breast cancer treatment in Vijayawada, the operated side appears flat, an external breast prosthesis placed inside the bra, may help achieve the appearance of symmetry when dressed.
  • 3) Breast reconstruction can be performed after mastectomy, either immediately or at a later date.

Surgery to the axilla - Sentinel lymph node biopsy / Axillary clearance

SENTINEL LYMPH NODE BIOPSY

Best breast cancer doctors in Vijayawada perform this procedure to check if the first few lymph nodes in the armpit have cancer cells. A blue dye and/ or a radioisotope dye is used to detect these nodes. This is usually performed along with the breast procedure, under general anaesthesia. The excised nodes are sent for histopathological examination by frozen section. The results of the test are usually available immediately within 30 to 45 minutes. If the report is positive for cancer cells, then the remaining lymph nodes also need to be removed.

AXILLARY CLEARANCE

Complete removal of axillary lymph nodes is performed, when spread of cancer cells from the breast to the armpit is proven through breast cancer diagnosis in Vijayawada or on positive sentinel lymph node biopsy. This may lead to stiffness of the arm and in some cases lymphoedema of the limb.
