A biopsy is conducted to collect a tissue sample from the breast lump for diagnosis. Any suspicious or even borderline suspicious breast lump needs to be sample to prove its identity. Breast lump biopsy helps determine the nature of the lump and based on this result, further treatment plan is decided. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. The tissue obtained is sent to a lab for examination under a microscope, which is then reported. The report should be available in 3 - 5 days generally. MRI-guided core needle biopsy: This procedure is performed under the MRI guidance for lesions that not visible on ultrasound or mammography.
Excision biopsy: This process involves removing the breast lump for examination. It is done in an operation theatre under sedation or general anaesthesia.
Punch biopsy is used for lesions on the nipple areola area and skin lesions.
Aspiration of breast cysts or abscess: a wide bore needle with syringe is used to pull out fluid or pus from the breast lumps.
